CHAPTER 8

[October]

Shelby looked up from her computer monitor to see Bruce standing in her office doorway. For a split second, and for the millionth time, her eyes soaked in the rugged features of the man she loved. But this time there was no color in his face, no teasing in his eyes, no curl on his lips. “What’s wrong?”

He closed the door behind him, walked around her desk and leaned over to embrace her. His heart thumped against her. He disengaged, silently handed her a plain, white envelope. “This came in today’s mail.”

Shelby examined the envelope—simple block lettering addressed to both of them at their Commonwealth Avenue address, no return address, an ‘October 2’ Boston post-mark disfiguring an American flag stamp. Probably not another letter from her mother. She pulled out a single sheet of white copy paper. It, too, was hand-written, in the same block lettering:

Dear Bruce and Shelby:

I just wanted to inform you that I am now in Boston, for a visit of undetermined length. I look forward to renewing our acquaintance; I was disappointed that you never saw fit to pay me a visit at my previous place of residence.

In the interest of fairness, I now extend to you the courtesy of declaring, “Game on!” You have chosen white in the upcoming battle, so I will play the black pieces. Appropriate, no?

Regards,

Rex Griffin

Her head lightened, her stomach churned, her extremities tingled. The monster was free, and it was stalking them.

She searched Bruce’s face for answers. He sighed, swallowed, spoke. “I called the hospital in New York. They weren’t very forthcoming, but I was able to confirm that he was discharged last week.”

She forced the words out of her mouth. “How is that possible?” Bruce’s arrangement with the hospital was that they were not to release Griffin under any circumstances.

“Like I said, they wouldn’t tell me anything. I could go up there and try to get some answers in person—”

“Not a chance. No way are you leaving me here alone with that whack-job on the loose.” This was a guy who bred his retarded sister like a farm animal, then murdered his twin brother. Not likely he would show much mercy to his enemies. She wrestled with a thought, rejected it. “And even I don’t think we can go to the police—by covering up his crimes and putting him in the hospital, we’re as guilty as he is.”

Bruce sighed again. “Would you feel better if we left town?”

Bruce willingness to flee frightened her almost as much as the letter itself. “And go where? Griffin doesn’t seem like the type to just give up. I mean, he came to Boston, obviously, to find us.”

Bruce tried to put on a brave face. “Maybe he’s just trying to scare us, just mess with our minds.”

“Yeah, and maybe you’re just dreaming. He’s here for revenge, Bruce. We ruined his plans, cost him millions of dollars. Then we locked him in a mental hospital. Can’t imagine why he’d be annoyed with us.”

Bruce peered out the window, weighing her words.
